Reading the Gazette to David at the Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze in Florence
October 15, 2022
John and Joni Custer of Lewes went on a three-week European adventure in June. Their travels included Rome, a Tuscan villa outside Florence, Paris and England’s Yorkshire Dales. They visited Highclere Castle and filming sites for the PBS series “All Creatures Great and Small.” They also had the incredible opportunity to visit the Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze in Florence. Here they are shown with the famous statue David, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, created in marble between 1501-04 by Italian artist Michelangelo. David stands 17 feet tall and weighs more than 12,000 pounds. The statue of the Biblical figure David is a favored subject in the art of Florence.
