Cape took it to the Caesar Rodney Riders on their Homecoming night Oct. 14, unleashing Maurki James for 173 yards and two touchdowns. James also had a 52-yard catch and run for a touchdown.
Counting a punt return of 24 yards, the junior had 249 all-purpose yards.
Cape broke away from a 7-7 game in the first quarter to win 41-13 and improve to 4-2 on the season.
The Riders remain winless at 0-7.
Cape will host Sussex Central Friday, Oct. 21. The Golden Knights are coming off a big 21-0 shutout of Dover and are 5-1 on the season.
Joe Coveleski was 8-for-11 with three touchdown passes to L.T. Messick, Keishawn Mansfield and James.
Coach Mike Frederick said: “Overall, very pleased with how the team played. The players took CR seriously, knew they had played a tough schedule, and certainly saw their athletic offensive play makers on film. CR definitely has talent, specifically speed and depth at running back. There are some things we need to clean up on the execution front. Disappointed to have two kicks blocked, and to turn the ball over twice. We won’t survive those mistakes heading forward. Our staff will be addressing the two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. We are building a program that looks to teach life lessons through the game of football. These men and women are future leaders, and we know on and off the field we represent our families, our teammates, our school and our community. Sportsmanship is a pillar of the Cape football foundation.”
Notes: Cape has averaged 42 points per game in its four victories. Cape has lost 28-21 to Salesianum and 33-12 to Dover. Salesianum beat Middletown 31-21 in the upset of the weekend.
