Cape Pop Warner 9U falls to Delmar in battle of unbeatens

It was a battle of two unblemished 6-0 playoff-bound teams Oct. 29, when Delmar visited the Cape 9U Pop Warner squad at Cape Henlopen’s Legends Stadium. The Cape team fought hard, but fell 24-7 to a bigger Delmar team. Cape goes to 6-1 on the season, while the Delmar team moves to 7-0.

Gus Lantz scored the lone Vikings touchdown on a 55-yard run up the sideline and into the end zone.

Cape quarterback Grant Hershelman was 8-for-12 passing and had three rushes for 96 total yards. Lantz had nine rushes and four catches for 163 total yards. Ben Pease had 10 rushes and four catches for 105 total yards.

“We are proud of our team and the battle they faced today,” said 9U head coach Barry Barlow. “We wish Delmar good luck in the regional competition and look forward to next week’s game against Laurel and the Henlopen championship playoffs.”

The Cape 11U team defeated Smyrna 26-6 in the last game of the afternoon.

Cape quarterback Robbie Myers threw two touchdown passes – one to Jameson Pease and the other to Tyson Johnson. Trey Dickinson also scored on a 47-yard run. 

On defense, Kamari Hazzard grabbed a pick six, and Owen Miafodzyeu sacked the Smyrna quarterback in the end zone for a safety.

The 11U squad moves to 4-2 and plays Berlin, Md., in the first round of the playoffs. Cape 11U fell to Berlin 28-14 in the regular season.
