November 27, 2022

Grass Roots Rescue held its fourth annual fundraising gala Nov. 19 at the Atlantic Sands in Rehoboth Beach.

Heels & Hooch Gala: The Masquerade benefitted the animals of Grass Roots Rescue, a Delaware-based animal rescue.

Music by DJ Hype Martinez, dancing, silent and live auctions, door prizes, a cash bar and a sit-down dinner were enjoyed by the nearly 180 attendees.

Grass Roots Rescue award recipients were Sherri Cook, Volunteer of the Year; Jana Buttram, Rookie of the Year; Adrienne Hegman, Ride or Die Award; Karen Sipple, Unsung Hero Award; and Marley Costango, Hooch’s Heart Award.

Nick and Marley Costango were named king and queen of the event.

Since the rescue’s inception in 2013, more than 4,000 dogs, cats and various other animals have been rescued from overstuffed kill shelters, hoarding situations and abusive homes, with nearly all animals adopted by loving families throughout Delmarva. Grass Roots’ scope is quite large, boasting more than 100 foster families throughout all three counties in Delaware, as well as parts of Maryland. The rescue is also known for taking in hospice animals and animals with severe medical conditions in hopes of providing them with quality of life for as long as possible.

“We had a great turnout for our fourth annual Heels & Hooch Gala,” said Grass Roots Rescue founder and Executive Director Karli Crenshaw. “We have so many animals in need right now. As we come out of the pandemic with folks going back to work and inflation continuing to rise, we are seeing more and more animals being surrendered, neglected and abandoned. As one of our largest fundraisers, we truly hope the funds raised from this event will allow us to not only continue, but to increase our ability to help the animals in our community. I want to thank everyone for coming and enjoying the event, and a special thank you to our sponsors and everyone that volunteered and donated items to our cause.”
