Blue Moon Restaurant in Lewes in 1941

Before the Blue Moon on Baltimore Avenue in Rehoboth Beach, there was the Blue Moon Restaurant on Bank Street in downtown Lewes. Located where Kindle is today, the Blue Moon in this image from 1941 sat directly behind the Lewes Post Office. The building at the end of the street along Front Street still stands today, recently home to a jeweler and real estate office. Although unseen, the Cannonball House sits on the corner opposite the post office, but the buildings to the left of this image have long been gone. According to a Feb. 26, 1946 article in the Morning News, the Blue Moon Restaurant was also home to Western Union Telegraph Office, which relocated from the Caesar Rodney Hotel on Second Street when the office changed from Morse code to teletype. The Blue Moon was also a frequent site of Lewes Chamber of Commerce meetings.
