After a sluggish first half, Cape turned on the afterburners, going on a 24-1 run through the first 12 minutes of the second half en route to a 43-26 victory Dec. 22.
“We looked like we were trying to figure out who we were, could we play or could we not play?” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “I told them to stop hesitating and wondering if we belong, if we can play, and do this and just go full speed ahead and see what happens. I don’t know what it was. I was just happy to get out of it.”
The twin towers, Amalia Fruchtman and Hayden Hudson, pulled in 10 rebounds each and teamed for five blocked shots, five steals and three assists. Fruchtman was the leading scorer with 16 points.
Faith Re continues to hit the long shot, putting up 15 points from behind the three-point line. She also slapped away a shot attempt.
Mya Maull continues her unreal performance from the point position, recording five points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
“Mya is legit,” Woods said. “What you’re seeing in spurts on the court now we have seen all summer and fall ball. She has worked her tail off.”
“I feel good on the court, and I’m feeling more comfortable with the ball each game,” said Maull. “I like pressuring on defense. I think it hypes up the team, and when I get a steal, the rest of the team is getting back and getting open shots.”
Ja’Onna Lee complements Maull at the other guard spot. She tallied five points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Jay’Lyn Slater, Lulu Rishko, Megan Smith, Grace Totten, Macy Steinwedel and Kayden Borge Williams each provided support off the bench.
“I definitely feel we played well in the second half,” said Hudson. “Playing a tough team like this will help us get ready to play better teams down the road.”
“This game also showed us that we have to come out ready to play in every game,” said Fruchtman. “It’s a wake-up call for us.”
Delaney Burroughs led the Lions with 13 points.
