Millsboro man charged with stealing car in connection with fatal Christmas Eve crash

December 27, 2022

A Millsboro man already facing charges in connection with a fatal Christmas Eve crash on Route 9 now faces charges for stealing the vehicle that police say he crashed.

Jason Wilcox, 46, was driving a 2016 Land Rover westbound on Route 9 around 8 p.m., Dec. 24, and crashed into a Honda Odyssey that pulled into the roadway from Minos Conaway Road, police said. Three people died after they were ejected from the Odyssey, and Delaware State Police later arrested Wilcox at his home on Christmas Day. At the time, Wilcox was charged with leaving the scene of a crash and other charges.

Following the crash, however, Lewes police and Delaware State Police went to a home in the 500 block of Kings Highway in connection with the fatal accident investigation and found Wilcox at the home. Police said Wilcox entered the home illegally and took keys for two vehicles without the consent of the owners, who were out of town. The Land Rover was one of the cars, and it was found at the scene of the crash, police said. The other car was recovered Dec. 25, police said.

Lewes police charged Wilcox with felony second-degree burglary, two felony counts of theft under $1,500 where the victim is 62 or older, and two counts of felony theft of a motor vehicle. He was released on unsecured bond, but was later committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in connection with the fatal crash charges.
