George A. LeCates Jr., retired mechanic

George A. LeCates Jr., 60, of Laurel, passed away Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, at home with his family by his side.  

He was born in Easton, Md., to the late George A. LeCates Sr. and Norma Lee Mitchell LeCates. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his brother-in-law Al Farley.

He was employed as a mechanic for Perdue in Georgetown and later in Bridgeville for approximately 33 years. George enjoyed all kinds of racing including dirt track and NASCAR, camping and hunting deer. He was known to be easy-going, humorous, kind and loving, and had a huge heart for helping others. George was a wonderful partner, dad, pop-pop, brother, and friend who will be dearly missed.

George is survived by his fiancée, Joyce Votta of Laurel; six children: Chad LeCates (Debbie) of Seaford, Chrissy Brasure (Tim) of Delmar, George "Lenny" LeCates of Seaford, Chris Smith (Tara) of Laurel; Jackie Aliff (Mikey) of Georgetown, and Angie Smith (Chase) of Laurel. He is also survived by one brother, Jimmy LeCates (Teresa) of Laurel; along with three sisters, Diane Toomey of Georgetown, Ruth Ann Boyer (Bob) of Laurel, and Beverly Nichols (Jimmy Steve) of Delmar. George also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, whom he adored, Cody, Zack, Julious, Aleckz, Alyssa, Gage, Grayson, Kenzie, Gavin, Jessa, Dylan and Brixton; as well as special friends, Robert Lockwood, Brad Johnson, and Neil and Patty Huber; and extended family and friends.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 2, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, where friends pay their respects from noon to 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Carey’s Cemetery in Millsboro. Pastor Mark Phillips will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a cancer foundation of choice.
