Indian River High School is lifting off a boys’ lacrosse program that seems well suited for a beach-area high school. The Indians completed an 11-4 season and were Henlopen Conference Southern Division champions; coach Dave Spencer was named conference Coach of the Year.
The Henlopen Conference has a rule that a conference championship will be held in sports with enough teams for two divisions.
Indian River played at Cape May 20 with virtually no chance to win; the Cape boys’ program has a 50-year head start on Indian River. Cape won the game 23-2. The Vikings led at halftime 18-1.
Goal scorers for Cape were Joe Coveleski with four, and Mike Guenther and Thomas Gibbs each with three. Adding two goals apiece were Luke Burton, Jack Schell, C.J. Fritchman, Brexton Carter, Mack Leonhartt, while Evan Burris, Jack Huss and Andrew Wolak each had one goal. Mason Trench and Gus Musika each had one save.
