A teenage boy was critically injured and two others suffered serious injuries in a crash June 18 in front of Shell We Bounce west of Five Points.
The crash happened at 1:02 p.m., when a 2003 Toyota Camry was traveling eastbound on Route 9. For unknown reason, the driver of the Camry tried to make a U-turn, said Sr. Cpl. Leonard DeMalto of the Delaware State Police. At the same time, a Lewes Fire Department ambulance was traveling westbound on Route 9 with its lights and siren activated. The two vehicles collided.
All three occupants of the car were from Lewes. The 42-year-old female driver was flown to an area hospital with serious injuries; a 40-year-old female passenger was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with serious injuries; and a 17-year-old male passenger was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with critical injuries.
Both the driver of the ambulance, a 27-year-old woman from Dagsboro, and the passenger, a 22-year-old woman from Crisfield, Md., were taken by ambulance to an area hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries.
There was no one in the back of the ambulance at the time of the crash, DeMalto said.
Route 9 was closed for about three-and-a-half hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
The Route 9 crash happened minutes after a 12:57 p.m. crash on Cave Neck Road at Hudson Road, DeMalto said. In that crash, he said, a Lewes man, 53, was driving a 2020 Buick northbound on Hudson Road and failed to properly yield to a 2008 Nissan Armada driven westbound by a Milton woman, 66.
The Buick was towed from the scene; DeMalto was unsure of any injuries.
