Lewes is a one-of-a-kind town with a great sense of community and historical charm. Lovers of Lewes can now listen to stories that capture the essence of the city through the We In Lewes podcast.
The purpose of the podcast is to celebrate the good within Lewes’ small-town community. The show provides an opportunity for listeners to get to know Lewes residents and feel the inclusivity of the community.
Host Kevin McGuiness dives into the lives of local community members who have remarkable stories to tell. His goal is to highlight the diversity and variety of the city.
“The idea is to introduce friends, neighbors and strangers to people so they get to learn more about them,” McGuiness said.
What McGuiness loves about Lewes is the people who inhabit it. He said he believes the people in the city are fascinating, accomplished, energetic humans and, through this podcast, he hopes to highlight that aspect of the city.
“What I love about Lewes is not just the charm, it's not just the historic features of the town, it's the people. Because the people, whether they live here year-round or are visitors, help create this community that is so interesting,” McGuiness said.
McGuiness seeks out people who equally share his love for Lewes, contribute to the town and help create its unique atmosphere.
McGuiness describes these kinds of people as “ands.” From his explanation, an “and” is a person with many levels who is involved in the community in multiple ways. They are individuals who are doing something important or special, interesting and active, and can speak well.
The podcast debuted June 5 and has since had a new show air every other week. McGuiness came up with the idea for the podcast after attending an event at Kindle in downtown Lewes.
The event was one that showed the city at its best with beachgoers, residents, elected officials and visitors all coming together to enjoy music by the Williams Brothers.
“We came here to enjoy this marvelous town and the people in it. I wanted to do something that gives people a chance to focus on that,” McGuiness said.
To kick off the podcast, McGuiness interviewed Delaware Bay and River pilot Capt. Stuart Griffin, who, he said, exemplifies the diversity of the town. Also recent guests include a group of five women who have walked together every weekday since becoming friends in 1996.
Both stories, as well as those to come, highlight the sense of community within Lewes as well as show the diversity and authenticity of the people who live there. To share this is McGuiness’s goal.
“No matter where you are and no matter how you’ve designed it, a town is not just the structure, it’s also the people in it because they set a tone, they create the culture of the town,” McGuiness said.
Other individuals instrumental in creating the podcast are technical coordinator Steve Esfandiari, social media manager Brooke Silver and Matt DiSabatino, a friend of McGuiness who allows him to use his restaurant, Kindle, as a recording space.
“Without them, none of this would be possible,” McGuiness said.
We In Lewes is available on most streaming services, including Spotify and Apple podcasts. Episodes air bi-weekly on Mondays. More information can be found online at www.weinlewes.com or on the We In Lewes social media platforms on Instagram and Facebook.
