Rehoboth Art League to host opening reception July 21
The Rehoboth Art League is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year.
Patrons can view the 85th Annual Members’ Fine Art Exhibition along with Terri Yacovelli’s solo show Mixing Colors: An Artist’s Exploration on display from Friday, July 21 to Sunday, Aug. 20. Plus, the league’s historic Doors of Fame remain on public view throughout the summer season.
A reception for all of the exhibitions will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., July 21, welcoming all to visit the Corkran, Tubbs, Ventures and Homestead galleries and see these new shows.
The long-standing members’ fine art exhibition highlights artwork by more than 80 member artists in a wide variety of media, including paintings in pastel, watercolor, acrylic, oil, and mixed media; sculptures of both metal and wood; photography; and more. As is traditional, several awards will be presented for outstanding artworks, judged by Michael Kalmbach.
Having been involved with various community art initiatives throughout his career, Kalmbach will give a free gallery talk at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 22, in the Corkran Gallery to provide an overview of his awards decisions and discuss other notable pieces from the members’ fine art exhibition.
Yacovelli creates an explosion of color in the Ventures Gallery. Her solo show examines humanity's physical and spiritual journey in the world. Visual metaphors of portals and passages are repeated in her works, and lines representing trails are obscured, broken and reconnected, mapping paths of people’s deliberate choices and those made by chance. The results show the balance and tension between the elements of her deliberate artistic choices and the physical property of the paint.
As part of its 85th anniversary celebration, the art league is hosting exhibitions and displays that showcase its history. In the DeWitt Gallery, the Doors of Fame will be on display for the public to view. The tradition of signing the Doors of Fame began on Dedication Day in 1938 when Rehoboth Art League founder Louise Corkran invited artists and distinguished visitors to paint their signature and a symbol of interest on one of the Paynter Studio’s doors. Today, three Doors of Fame contain more than 270 signatures of notable visitors to the art league including artists, diplomats, musicians, writers, educators, scientists, legislators and more.
The historic Homestead building will house additional works from local artists, extending the members’ sales gallery. Visitors can browse unique fine art and fine crafts among the antique decor, overlooking lush gardens.
The exhibitions are free and open to everyone during the regular gallery hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m., Sunday.
