July 30, 2023

Terry Andrew Megee, 67, of Georgetown, passed away suddenly Thursday, July 27, 2023. Terry was born May 22, 1956, in Milford, son of the late Floyd Andrew Megee and Dorothy Mae Mumford Megee. He was also predeceased by his brother, Floyd Megee Jr.; and his sister, Rheba Fleetwood.

He was a 1974 graduate of Sussex Central High School, where he had served as class president and student council president, and a 1977 graduate of Salisbury State University. From a very early age, he worked at his father’s car dealership, Megee Motors, beginning with the parts department, until he purchased the business in 1992 and took over the dealership. Known as a family tradition since 1948, Terry and his family continued to grow and build the extremely successful dealership it is today.

Throughout his life, he was immensely devoted to his wife, his children, and especially, his grandchildren. His support in their many sports endeavors brought him many hours of enjoyment. In addition, his unwavering support of his community through many memberships and endeavors, and his philanthropic generosity have left a mark for many years to come.

His accomplishments included the following: youngest member of the Indian River School District school board from 1980-86, serving on the Finance Committee of Grace United Methodist Church and helping to run the youth group at the church, serving as the vice president of Georgetown Little League, where he received Volunteer of the Year in 1996, coaching at all levels of the Georgetown Little League, including the 1980-81 Georgetown Little League Big League Team and helping to start the T-Ball program, helped form Georgetown Little League basketball at the Armory, and started the swim team at Sussex Pines Country Club.

In the early ‘70s, he helped to raise money to have a youth group building built as a place for youth to gather, which is now the Possum Point Players facility.  He was very active in the Boys & Girls Club of Georgetown, where he helped to personally remodel the club building and where he had served not only as president, but was also the first recipient of the Great Futures Award issued by the club.

His professional accomplishments were many, including having served as the president of Delaware Auto Dealers Truck Association, being featured on the cover of Time Magazine as the 2009 Dealer of the Year Award winner in Delaware, currently serving as a board member with Delaware National Bank, which is now Fulton Bank, since 1996, as well as serving for the past nine years on Beebe Healthcare Board of Directors, where he was currently serving as chairman.

In his spare time, he was an avid hunter, fisherman and all-around outdoorsman, who enjoyed building things with his hands and put his talents to work with photography. He also enjoyed farming and gardening, working with youth, watching sports, following historical events, and being the go-to person for knowledge on many different fronts, as he had a phenomenal memory. Riding in his 1940 Plymouth Coupe was a favorite pastime as well as riding on the beach.  He was also known for his barbeques, making sure there was ice cream for everyone and working behind the scenes to make sure every detail was accomplished.

Terry is survived by his high school sweetheart and his beloved wife of 47 years, Vanessa Adkins Megee; his daughter, Lindsay Megee (John); his son, Matt Megee (Stacey); granddaughters, Estella, Andi Mae and Vanessa Jo, all of Georgetown; sisters, Bonnie King, Rhonda Davis and Cheryl Howard (Ron), all of Georgetown; brother-in-law, Stanton Adkins (Margie) of Millsboro; father-in-law, George Adkins of Rehoboth Beach; and many nieces and nephews.
