Groome Church to host Religion in Art talks starting Oct. 4

Women of the Bible is focus of four-week series
September 29, 2023

Religion in Art: Women of the Bible, a four-week lecture/discussion series, will begin Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Groome Church, 601 Savannah Road, Lewes.

Participants will explore how master artists and others chose to depict and interpret many of the notable (and sometimes notorious) women of the Bible. The series looks at a variety of artists from different historical periods and includes works by Dürer, Rubens, van Leyden, Carot, Dali and more. The first two weeks of the series will address women from the Old Testament, while the second two-week period will take up women from the New Testament.

The free lecture series is open to the public, and includes a complimentary soup and sandwich lunch. Sessions will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Wednesdays, Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25.

To reserve a space, call 302-645-6256 or email gumc1@hotmail.com.

The Rev. Dr. S. Willard Crossan III, Groome pastor, said, “Last spring, we undertook a series on Christ’s Journey to the Cross, which was very well attended and received – so much so that participants requested we do another series combining art and another topic from the Bible, prompting us to delve into stories about women and their role in early religion and society. That said, it is important to note that these stories were written primarily by men, and that each story has a historical and literary context that influences interpretations. I’m very much looking forward to interesting questions and lively discussions on this topic!”
