Milton volunteer fair signs up new recruits

November 22, 2023

Miltonians looking to help out in the community came out Nov. 15 for the first Milton Volunteer Fair, held at Milton library.

The event, a joint venture of the Milton Chamber of Commerce, Milton Public Library and Cape Henlopen School District, brought in nonprofit organizations looking for volunteers. Among those on hand were the Milton Community Food Pantry, Milton Chamber of Commerce, Milton Lions Club and Cape Henlopen High School’s mentoring program.

Karen Falk, executive director of the chamber, said the intention is to do the fair every year.

“It just makes the community so unique, and we all know they need help,” Falk said of the nonprofits. “It’s pulling everyone together.”

All told, 17 organizations took part in the fair, and Falk said there is room to accommodate more next year.

Kim Hoey Stevenson, coordinator for the Cape district’s mentoring program said, “We talked about doing a program just for the mentoring program, but we thought there were a lot of people wanting to do volunteering, but they don’t all want to work with kids. So we thought, ‘Why not the idea of doing a fair?’”

Falk said she was happy with the attendance, and that the willingness to volunteer for community-based organizations helps make Milton a special place.
