Cape boys’ basketball downs the Eagles 61-44
Three Cape players hit for double figures as the boys’ basketball team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 61-44 victory over Smyrna Dec. 12.
Senior Jack Schell dropped 17, freshman Geordan Downing scored 15 and senior Kameron Trammell hit for 10.
The Vikings had a two-week layoff between games, but Cape coach Steve Re said he believes the 14 days actually helped his team’s performance.
“It was a blessing in disguise,” said Re. “It gave me an entire week and one day with the football guys coming off their state championship game. I was able to run a crash course of our system in a week. It really benefited everybody.”
Re was quick to praise his players for their roles.
“Jack [Schell] does what he does best and makes life difficult for our opponents when we get the ball to him,” Re said. “Jayden Dukes is one of the most improved players in the conference. He has worked so hard to improve his game, and it shows with his poise and decision marking. Jameson Tingle and Geordan Downing will be fun to watch together over the next few years. They fit our system really well and are great, hardworking kids. We are excited about Kameron Trammell’s improvement as well. He is such a calming and controlled presence on the floor. And Manny Ortiz and Collin Sivels are great, unselfish pieces to what we do, and they will continue to contribute and get better each game.”
“Coming off soccer season, I’m still in pretty good shape, and that has helped me,” said Schell. “We got our football players back, and it’s really helped us. We’re a full team now. I think we played pretty well. I’m happy with our play tonight.”
“It felt pretty good tonight,” said Downing. “I try to help bring our energy up. I feel pretty confident right now.”
“This win felt great,” said Dukes. “We got our first Northern Division win tonight, and I feel pretty good going into the season.”
The Vikings travel to Sussex Central Thursday, Dec. 14, for another divisional game with the Golden Knights.
Cape girls top Smyrna
The Cape girls’ basketball team soared over Smyrna Dec. 12, with a 47-38 win on the road. After trailing by three points at halftime, the Vikings outscored the Eagles 26-14 in the second half.
Cape was led by Amalia Fruchtman with 19 points and eight rebounds. Joining her in double figures was Faith Re with 11 points. Havyn Greene tallied nine points.
The Vikings will travel to Germantown Academy near Philadelphia Friday and Saturday, Dec. 15-16, in for a pair of games in the Make-A-Wish Foundation Classic.
