Edna Lea Eckert, enjoyed traveling, quilting

December 14, 2023

Edna Lea (York) Eckert, 96, of Lewes, passed away Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, daughter of the late Edgar York and Cary Gladys (Coogan) York.

Edna worked for the government during WWII. She was a mother and wife for many years, and then proceeded to get her nursing license, later working for the Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md. Upon her retirement to the Lewes Beach area, Edma became involved in the local community. She spent countless hours volunteering at Beebe Hospital's same-day surgery department as well as their thrift shop.

Edna and her husband loved traveling together, taking many memorable trips across the country and cruising the oceans. Edna enjoyed quilting at Cape Henlopen Senior Center and was an avid square dancer who enjoyed being a member of The Whirlways and Sussex Shores Senior Squares. However, her greatest joy was in caring for her family whether taking care of everyone healthy or ill. She will be dearly missed.

Edna is survived by a daughter, Christine DeMaio and her husband Dorian; a granddaughter, Lauren DeMaio; several nieces; a nephew; and many other family members.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 16, at Parklawn Memorial Park, 12800 Veirs Mill Road, Rockville, Md.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Edna’s memory may be made to Easter Seals Foundation, 600 N. DuPont Hwy., Georgetown, DE 19947; or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
