The memory of Amanda Haxton, a former Cape field hockey player, was shining bright Dec. 17, as former friends, teammates and coaches took part in the annual Hockey 4 Haxton indoor field hockey tournament to raise funds for scholarships and the Easterseals Rehabilitation Center in Georgetown.
Haxton, who graduated from Cape in 2005, was an award-winning hockey player. She died Feb. 10, 2008.
Teams competing this year were Delaware Shore U12, Delaware Shore U14, Blue Fusion, Jingle Dels, Ice Queens, Shotgunners, Happy Campers, The Bombs, Team Judge: Gangsta Wrapper and Glorious Grinches.
More than 90 players took part in the annual fundraising event that garnered more than $5,600.
This year’s recipient of the Hockey 4 Haxton scholarship is Cape senior Samantha Swift.
“It's great to see teams return every year, and new teams are added,” said director Steph Brown. “It's great to bring together players and parents who knew Amanda, the passion she had for field hockey and life, then adding new people sharing the same spirit as Amanda. We award a senior Delaware Shore athlete a scholarship and we also make a donation to Easterseals in Georgetown. I'm so thankful for everyone coming together to help make Hockey 4 Haxton a success each year. It takes a village.”
