A linebacker who used to wreak havoc on Henlopen Conference backfields will now be patrolling the field against ACC opponents in Division I football.
Woodbridge graduate Wyatt Wright, the No. 2 linebacker in the JUCO 2024 class, signed his letter of intent to play for the North Carolina State Wolfpack during a Dec. 20 gathering at OutTrain Performance.
“Having to stay down for two years in JUCO ... if you’re not grinding it out there, you'll fail,” Wright said. “Most people give up, but I stayed the course, stayed down, kept true with myself, with my faith and everything, so it feels good finally knowing that it paid off.”
OutTrain Performance trainer and owner Michael Sager said Wright’s signing was a long time coming and the result of his relentless work ethic. Wright first traveled to California to play junior college football before he transferred to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and led the team in tackles in the 2023 season. Wright put in countless hours at OutTrain Performance to put himself in a position to have such an opportunity.
“I feel I've been ready, and now I’m finally getting the shot,” Wright said.
Proud parents Willie and Laticia Wright were on hand to support their son, something Wright said he has had his whole life.
“They've been waiting on this, but they’ve been patient,” he said. “They keep supporting me and do everything for me. Two years is a long time to keep faith in somebody, but they never stopped believing in me.”
Despite the commitment it takes to become a Division I football player, Willie and Laticia said they never pushed their son.
“He worked his way to get there and had patience,” Willie said. “He had adversity, but he kept his head up and kept driving. I’m proud of him for the process and for holding tight to his dream.”
Laticia said they are not to type of parents to force things on their kids, but when they saw Wyatt play Pop Warner, they knew it was something he loved and needed support for.
In addition to his parents, Wright also credits OutTrain Performance for helping him succeed.
