Athletes of the Week Dec. 29

December 29, 2023
Kevin Lewandowski

There's a distinct possibility that by the time one is done spelling Kevin Lewandowski's name, he is halfway done swimming the 50 freestyle. Winning the event in three of Cape's first four meets, the senior's best time so far came Dec. 20 against Lake Forest, when he finished in 23.36 seconds. In the meet against Seaford Dec. 18, Lewandowski won the 100 freestyle in 52.08 seconds. He has also been a member of the winning 200 medley and freestyle relay teams to help the Vikings to a 4-0 start. Kevin began swimming at the Sussex Family YMCA eight years ago. He enjoys the camaraderie of high school swimming, and the joy of qualifying for conferences and states. He credits his success to routinely practicing and constantly improving on even the smallest of things. The senior hopes to swim in college and will be majoring in business, with a focus on marketing. Lewandowski enjoys spending time with his friends and riding whichever board the season calls for. Kevin said his favorite spot to skate is Epworth Skate Park.

Darius Miller

A junior on the undefeated 6-0 Lake Forest boys’ basketball team, Darius scored 21 points – including a pair of dunks – in the Spartans’ 58-32 dominating win in Cape’s Big House Dec. 21. Darius is averaging 23 points per game over the first six games of the season. Darius's dad, Deon Miller, attended Rehoboth Junior High before transferring to Lake Forest in seventh grade. He graduated in 1995. Deon now teaches at WT Chipman Middle School in Lake Forest School District. He is related locally to Thomas and Tesha Miller (point guard) as their grandfathers are brothers. Darius was a DIAA Scholar Athlete this fall. He was a first-team All District wide receiver and defensive back, and second-team All District punter. He was also second-team all-state wide receiver. Darius’s college plans are undecided at this time.

Jenna Reinhold

This Cape junior is one of the leaders of the swim team. She opened the season on a tear, picking up individual victories in the 200 individual medley, backstroke, 50 freestyle, breaststroke, and butterfly, and as a member of the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle teams. She began swimming for Lewes Yacht Club when she was 6 and picked up year-round swimming at the Sussex Family YMCA in fifth grade. It’s been her primary sport for the past six years; she enjoys the individual challenge, but is a fan of the teamwork in high school swimming. Jenna remembers having older swimmers encourage her, and she continues that practice as an upperclassman. Her favorite subject is math, which will go a long way in pursuing an engineering degree at the college level. Jenna enjoys reading, watching sports, and hanging out with friends and family. Admittedly a big Swifty, she says she listens to Taylor Swift most of the time, which could help her shake off college swim coaches hoping to recruit her, as she says academics will be her focus in college.

Jack Schell

This senior big man on the Cape boys’ basketball team is leading the team in points and rebounds through the first six games of the 2023-24 season. He also has the highest field goal percentage. “As we have been struggling, Jack has been the most consistent player for us each night,” said Cape coach Steve Re. “He battles every night. I’m hoping some of the younger guys watch the way he competes and can learn from his efforts.” In Cape’s 57-46 loss to Caravel Academy in the Slam Dunk to the Beach opener Dec. 26, Jack led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds. He scored 12 of those points in the second half, as the Vikings battled to stay within striking distance of the Buccaneers. Jack is coming off a successful soccer season when he was a leader on the Vikings team that reached the state finals. This spring, he’ll be playing his main sport of lacrosse as the Vikings vie for another championship. Jack recently signed a letter of intent to attend and play lacrosse at Syracuse University in upstate New York.
