World Down Syndrome Day celebrations feature mismatched socks

April 4, 2024

People all over the globe mark World Down Syndrome Day by wearing mismatched, often wildly colorful socks.

Established in 2012 by the United Nations General Assembly, World Down Syndrome Day is held each year on March 21, to raise awareness of this genetic condition. Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is caused when a child is born with a third copy of chromosome 21, so the commemorative date chosen is 3/21.

Rock Your Socks is a global event that aims to raise awareness and help create a single voice to advocate for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down syndrome in schools, the community and around the world. To do that, families, students, staff and even pets get involved in wearing crazy and silly socks for the day. For more information, go to dsadelaware.org.
