April 14, 2024

Four teens who were in a stolen car from Dover face charges after crashing into a fence near the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk April 13.

Delaware State Police said a 15-year-old was driving a stolen Honda CRV from Dover in Bethany Beach at 7:21 p.m. with three teenage passengers when a Bethany Beach officer tried to make a traffic stop. The teen drove away, and troopers next spotted the vehicle speeding north on Route 1 near Fred Hudson Road. Police discontinued the chase due to the Honda’s excessive speed. The driver went through Dewey Beach before turning eastbound on Silver Lake Drive toward Rehoboth Beach.

A Delaware State Police Aviation unit was monitoring the car’s path until it crashed into a fence at the end of Olive Avenue near the Rehoboth Boardwalk. All four teens then fled on foot, police said, but troopers and officers from Dewey Beach and Rehoboth Beach apprehended them near the Henlopen Hotel.

Police said they found a firearm within easy reach inside the vehicle. No citizens were injured during this incident.

The 15-year-old driver and three passengers, ages 17, 15, and 14, were transported to Troop 7 and charged with felony possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, felony possession of a deadly weapon by a person under 18, felony receiving stolen property over $1,500, second-degree conspiracy, and resisting arrest.

The driver also faces multiple traffic violations charges. They were all arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to Stevenson House Detention in lieu of secured bond – the driver on $12,500; the passengers on $17,000.
