Blood drive to honor childhood cancer survivor June 1

The Blood Bank of Delmarva will host the second Handley Family Blood Drive from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 1, at Cape Henlopen High School, in honor of childhood cancer survivor Madison Handley.

Madison, age 14, is an eighth-grader at Beacon Middle School. Despite her yourh, she has already beaten cancer twice. Madison is an avid swimmer and soccer player, as well as a member of the National Junior Honor Society and Girl Scout Troop 701. Madison’s Girl Scout troop is organizing this blood drive for the second year in a row, honoring their friend after she received lifesaving blood transfusions during her cancer treatments.

This drive comes during an especially critical period; the summer months are a challenging time for blood collection, since school breaks, summer travel and seasonal gatherings make blood donation less of a priority.

Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration recently lifted several blood donor eligibility restrictions. To view current eligibility guidelines and to schedule a donation appointment, go to delmarvablood.org or call 1-888-8-BLOOD-8.
