Local author’s book cover design named among indie finalists

June 6, 2024

The cover design for “The Wrong Life,” a novel by local author Judy Wood, was one of eight finalists in the best design category for the Next Generation Indie Book Awards.

“The Wrong Life” tells the story of Samantha, a woman who has it all – intelligence, wealth, a loving family, great friends – but struggles to find firm footing in her world. The cover captures this struggle perfectly, depicting a woman on a tightrope strung across Georgetown in Washington, D.C., where the story takes place.

Wood is thrilled with the recognition. “I love my book cover. But in the end, it’s all about the book itself, about the writing, and what I hope most is that this award will lead more readers to ‘The Wrong Life.’”

“I’m not surprised by this at all,” said Maribeth Fischer, Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild executive director. “Judy probably had her publisher send well over 30 different cover designs – maybe well over 40. Many were beautiful, but Judy had a vision of what she wanted and would not settle for less. I feel every writer should follow her lead; fight for the book you want and don’t settle. We, as writers, spend so many years honing the craft, worrying over every sentence. Why shouldn’t the packaging for our books reflect that?”

For local readers, “The Wrong Life” is available at Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach Books.

The NGIBA program was established to honor the most exceptional independently published books in 80 different categories each year. The judges include expert editors, writers and publishers as well as professional book designers.
