Dodging for Dogs hits Dewey Beach

Event raise funds for Grass Roots Rescue
June 6, 2024

Dodging for Dogs pounded the beach at The Lighthouse on Dickinson Avenue in Dewey Beach June 3, when 15 teams competed for bragging rights and the satisfaction of helping local canine group Grass Roots Rescue.

Grass Roots Rescue is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit group that saves dogs who are at risk in shelters and within the community.

Johnny Davidson from TKo Hospitality and Grass Roots Rescue board member Taylor Reid created the event as The Lighthouse has one of the few dog-friendly beaches in Dewey.

The dodgeball night brought out teams from local restaurants to compete in the tournament. Registration fees benefited Grass Roots Rescue. Additionally, Tito's/Breakthru Beverage has sponsored a drink special at the restaurant through August, with $1 from each drink going to Grass Roots Rescue.

“We're not government-funded,” said Reid. “And fundraisers like this and community support are a huge part of how we're able to function as a nonprofit. The #GRRTribe is so grateful for Johnny and the rest of the team at The Lighthouse, and for Tito's/Breakthru Beverage's support.”

Grass Roots Rescue volunteers and fosters had adoptable dogs on the deck to cheer on the teams and give doggie kisses to players and attendees.

When the sand settled, The Ugly Boys team from the North Shores lifeguards took top honors in the competition.
