DAR to dedicate new memorial banners June 14

June 12, 2024

The Maj. Nathaniel Mitchell Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is adding nine more Hometown Heroes banners.

A dedication ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m., Friday, June 14, which is Flag Day, on The Circle in Georgetown. All are welcome. The dedication is an important time to show appreciation and memorialize the names of those who sacrifice so much, as President Abraham Lincoln did while delivering the Gettysburg Address more than 160 years ago.

The living tribute recognizes and honors military personnel who are currently serving or veterans who have served in the United States armed forces. To qualify, currently enlisted personnel and living or deceased veterans must have or have had a connection to Georgetown at some point in their life. They may have attended school or served in Georgetown, or be related to someone in Georgetown.

Those honored on war memorials, and veterans recommended by local VFW and American Legion posts qualify as well.

President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation in 1916 that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. The National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress Aug. 3, 1949.
