Smiley breaks away from Beebe Heroes 5K field

The fifth annual Beebe Heroes 5K Run/Walk June 30 produced 270 run finishers and 36 walkers.

The Lewes race was staged at Irish Eyes with the start and finish lines on Market Street Extended.

Dylan Smiley, 26, who has been crushing the competition this early season, was the overall champion in 15:32. Matt Sparacino, 46, was second overall and masters champion in 18:39. Kailyn Buckley, 34, was the overall women's winner in 20:05. Karen Cathell, 43, captured the female masters title in 22:16.  

Bill McNary, 51, was third overall and won the 50-54 male age group in 19:31. Rich Jones, 56, of Milton won the 55-59 age group in 22:34. Tim Young, 64, of Rehoboth won the 60-64 age group in 22:46. Makenna Danahy won the 14-19 division in 19:47. Terry Pettyjohn won the 20-24 age group in 20:32.

Don Zalenski, 78, was the fastest walker in 37:58. Karen Lukeman, 64, was the fastest female walker in 38:10.

Seashore Striders will host the Firecracker 5K at 7:30 a.m., Saturday, July 6, starting from Grove Park. The Dave Reynolds Biathlon is set for 8 a.m., Sunday, July 7, on the Rehoboth Boardwalk.
