Funland is a staple of Rehoboth Beach

July 9, 2024

Funland has been the source of lasting memories for thousands of families visiting Rehoboth Beach for decades. This photograph from the Library of Congress shows Funland as it appeared in 1985. The Fasnacht family of Hershey, Pa., purchased the property from the Dentino family in 1962. The infamous Storm of ’62 wiped out much of Rehoboth Beach’s beachfront property just a few days before the sale closed.

The wheels were set in motion in the summer of 1961, when Allen and Don Fasnacht, their wives Jean and Dee, and their parents Al and Sis visited Rehoboth Beach. They met the owner of Rehoboth Beach Sports Center, who said the business was available for purchase. After returning to Pennsylvania, the Fasnachts eventually made the decision to move forward.

From the original first and second generation, there are now more than 20 third- and fourth-generation family members who are directly involved with the business. There are now more than 10 fifth-generation members coming up behind.
