September 13, 2024

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice will hold its inaugural Difference Makers Gala from 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Kings Creek Country Club, Rehoboth Beach.

The festivities will include a delicious dinner by Executive Chef Phil Lambert, formerly of 1776 in Rehoboth Beach; a silent auction; DJ; and dancing.

The event will celebrate honorees Charlotte King, Preston and Kathleen Schell, and Ryan’s Beach Shop, who have given their time, commitment and support to make a difference in the community.

SDARJ President Clara Licata said, “The Difference Makers awards were inspired by SDARJ’s former president, Charlotte King, who for years has brought together people of good will who want to make a difference in southern Delaware.”

King co-founded SDARJ in 2015 and served as its chair until February 2024. She is one of the most influential Delawareans in the area of social justice. King also served as president of the Delaware League of Women Voters and executive director of the Department of Social Services for the state of Maryland.

Preston and Kathleen Schell have contributed generously to many projects and causes in Sussex County related to racial justice and equality, including the March for Our Lives, anti-racism billboards, the John Lewis Bridge Walk, and the renovation of the Nassau School.

Ryan’s Beach Shop was an early supporter of SDARJ’s mission. They have sponsored SDARJ initiatives and events. Ryan’s has also continuously demonstrated support of all people by offering SDARJ merchandise and other items in their store that reflect their commitment to racial justice and equality.

Tickets for the gala are $125 per person. Sponsorships are also available. To purchase tickets or sponsor the gala, go to sdarj.org.
