Dewey increases staff for sound readings

Dewey Beach commissioners voted unanimously Sept. 20 on an ordinance to amend code to authorize trained police officers and town staff to operate a sound-level meter and investigate noise disturbances. The original ordinance authorized only a police officer with this responsibility.

Halloween-themed children’s show to open Oct. 4

Second Street Players announced its children’s stage production, “Boo! Thirteen Scenes from Halloween,” will run Friday to Sunday, Oct. 4 to 6, at the Riverfront Theater, 2 South Walnut St., Milford.

With a full moon and a grinning jack-o-lantern beaming from every window, it’s a hard heart that doesn’t get a little spooked at Halloween. This witch’s brew of 13 playlets, each with a sinister twist, is designed to make the skin crawl and tickle funny bones with a few scary chuckles. Full of a wicked assortment of trick-or-treaters, grave diggers, witches and goblins, each story is a haunt all by itself.

Directed by Rachel Loper, “Boo! Thirteen Scenes from Halloween” is written by Pat Cook.

Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7 p.m., and Sunday shows begin at 2 p.m. Friday night’s performance is pay-what-you-can at the door, donations only. Saturday and Sunday ticket prices are $5 per child and $10 per adult.

Indian Mission UMC homecoming set Oct. 6

Rehoboth Concert Band to play near Milton Oct. 6

Rehoboth Concert Band will perform a free outdoor show at 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6, on the green in the Paynter’s Mill community near Milton.

Musical Director Steven Kieley said, “For our premier performance of our 2024-25 season, we’re diving into an entertaining and diverse selection of pieces that highlights the incredible talent of our musicians and the power of live performance. We’ve curated a program that spans a variety of genres, from band masterpieces, movie musical soundtracks and marches to contemporary works that will resonate with today’s audiences.”

UUSD blessing of the animals set Oct. 6

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold a blessing of the animals service at 10 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 6. The Rev. Heather Rion Starr said, “The service will start out in the sanctuary and end a little earlier than usual. Those of you who live close by and who would like to can return home and bring your pet to UUSD’s beautiful backyard for a blessing. Verizon seeks tower on Old Landing Road

The Sussex County Board of Adjustment will meet at 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 7, at the County Administration Building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. Among items on the agenda is a special-use exception request from Cellco Partnership aka Verizon Wireless to place a telecommunications tower on the west side of Old Landing Road.

Friends of Rehoboth library sets board info meeting Oct. 8

The Friends of the Rehoboth Beach Public Library is looking for new members to join its board of directors. The Friends group is the fundraising arm for the library, financing 100% of the library’s collection and supporting programming. 

Board members are expected to attend monthly meetings and participate in fundraising activities throughout the year. The most recent fundraisers, a summer garden party and the 30 Chances to Win Daily Raffle, raised record amounts for the library.

The Friends board meets at 9:30 a.m., the first Tuesday of each month in the library’s upstairs meeting room, 226 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach. Those interested are invited to attend the Oct. 8 meeting to learn more about the Friends group. Entrance is through the rear door of the library..

Lewes finance panel to meet Oct. 8

The Lewes Financial Stewardship Subcommittee will meet at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Rollins Center.

Sussex P&Z to meet Oct. 9

The Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission will meet at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the County Administration Building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. The agenda includes possible action on a revised preliminary site plan to build a convenience store at the intersection of Route 24 and Mulberry Knoll Road just east of Beacon Middle School. 

Also on the agenda is a possible decision on several applications related to the Northstar mixed-use development. The project developer seeks to build 758 single-family homes on 379 acres between Route 9 and Beaver Dam Road just west of Lewes. The project also includes a zoning-change request from AR-1 agricultural-residential to C-3 heavy commercial for a 12.6-acre parcel, as well as a zoning change request from AR-1 agricultural-residential to MR medium-density residential and a conditional-use request to construct multifamily buildings for 94 units on a 7.8-acre parcel.

The commission will also receive additional documents related to an expansion of the Anchors Run cluster subdivision off Beaver Dam Road. The developer is seeking to add 91 lots to a previously approved plan. 

After a recess, the commission will hold several public hearings. Among them is a proposal for Lockhaven, a standard subdivision request to divide 81.84 acres into 18 single-family home lots along Round Pole Bridge Road south of Milton.

Family day set Oct. 12 at Nanticoke center

Indian Mission United Methodist Church will sponsor a Fall Family Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Nanticoke Indian Center, 27073 John J. Williams Hwy., Millsboro.

Lewes CHEER Center sets yard sale, breakfast Oct. 12

Harbour Lights CHEER Center in Lewes will host a yard sale and breakfast Saturday, Oct. 12, at 34211 Woods Edge Drive off Kings Highway. The public is welcome. The yard sale will run from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m., and breakfast will be available from 7:30 until 10:30 a.m. 

Vendors are invited to set up and sell their items at $10 per table. Spaces are limited, so early reservations are recommended; call 302-327-9491 to reserve a table.

CHEER is also accepting donations of items from the public to sell for fundraising. They can be dropped off at the center by Thursday, Oct. 10.

Tanger Outlets pink party set Oct. 12

To support breast cancer awareness, education and research, Tanger Outlets Rehoboth Beach will host a pink party, free and open to the public, from 3 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, inside Schellville’s Harvest Fest, 36470 Seaside Outlet Drive, Rehoboth Beach. Harvest Day service welcomes tractors Oct. 13

The Annual Harvest Day - Drive Your Tractor to Church worship service will be held at 10 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 13, at Israel United Methodist Church parking lot, 20230 Plantation Road, Lewes. Tractors will gather by 9 a.m. at the Rabbit's Ferry Community Center, 19112 Robinsonville Road, Lewes, and convoy directly to the church. All are welcome to come and worship in casual farm attire, and see all types of tractors and farm equipment for this special harvest event.

Guest speaker Tina Beaird will present “Illinois County Resource Primer.” 

Beaird is the owner of Tamarack Genealogy and works as a genealogy/local history librarian at the Plainfield Public Library in Plainfield, Ill. She lectures extensively on topics including genealogical methodology, military research and archival preservation. She has provided research assistance for 20 years and has been researching her family’s history, as time permits, for more than 30 years. She is a rabid baseball fan, and she and her family have visited 24 out of 30 Major League Baseball parks across the U.S.

Candidates night held locally

The Delaware Convention of States Team will host Candidate Town Halls in Lewes and Millsboro for House and Senate District candidates seeking election. All parties, and all constituents are invited. An event will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at the Lewes Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes, for candidates for the 14th District House seat, the 20th District House seat, and the 6th District Senate seat. An event for House candidates for District 4 and 41 will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Millsboro Fire Hall.

Audience members will submit questions to a moderator for each candidate.
