Beebe Healthcare welcomes John Powell as physician in chief

November 8, 2024

John Powell, MD, MHCDS, FACEP, is returning to his roots in Sussex County and joining Beebe Healthcare as its physician in chief.

Powell is board-certified in emergency medicine and has more than 20 years of dedicated experience in healthcare. Most recently, Powell established the Emergency Services Service Line at ChristianaCare. He served as the co-physician leader for the Acute Medicine Service Line for hospitalists, emergency and critical care services. His experience includes being the chair of emergency medicine and physician executive in the ChristianaCare Medical Group. Powell has extensive experience in healthcare operations, clinical care design, value-based care partnerships, change management and performance improvement.

“We are thrilled to have recruited Dr. Powell back to Sussex County,” said Paul Sierzenski, MD, MSHQS, CPE, FACEP, Beebe Healthcare senior vice president and chief physician executive. “Dr. Powell brings extensive experience and expertise to assist Beebe Healthcare’s transformation as we serve our growing community. We are excited about the impact that John’s leadership and support will bring for our patients, clinicians, community and organization.”

Powell’s primary responsibility as physician in chief will be oversight of medical and clinical specialty care across Beebe Healthcare and Beebe Medical Group. He will collaborate with medical directors, operational leaders and staff, as well as the surgeon in chief and chief advanced practice clinician.

Powell attended Sussex Central High School, graduated from the University of Delaware and then worked at The Advisory Board Company based in Washington, D.C., prior to completing medical school at Jefferson Medical College. He finished a general surgery internship at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and then served active duty as a United States Navy diver and undersea medical officer. He returned to Delaware, and completed his residency and fellowship in emergency medicine and emergency point-of-care ultrasound at ChristianaCare. He holds a master’s degree in health care delivery science from Dartmouth College and the Tuck School of Business.

Powell is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Medical Society of Delaware. He was academic faculty in emergency medicine education for more than a decade, participated in clinical trials, delivered presentations and lectures, and authored and published papers in his areas of expertise. He just completed three terms on the ChristianaCare HomeHealth board and recently joined the board of directors for Westside Health, a federally qualified health center.

“I’m excited to return home to Sussex County, the community that provided me the foundation for success, and dedicate myself to the Beebe Healthcare mission to encourage healthy living, prevent illness and restore optimal health to our community by advancing access to exceptional care throughout Sussex County,” Powell said.

Outside of work, Dr. Powell enjoys spending time with his wife, Jennifer, and their daughter and son. He likes to renovate homes and landscaping, while also enjoying outdoor activities such as running, rucking, hunting, and fishing, and is a self-described fledgling surfer.
