Winning the 2024 Henlopen North, the Henlopen Conference Championship regular-season title and the Henlopen Conference Championship meet was quite the accomplishment for the Cape boys’ swim team last season, but the Vikings are looking for a bigger prize as they prepare for the 2024-25 season.
They are looking for a podium spot at the DIAA state championships following a 12-2 season in 2023-24. Last season, they fell to Brandywine by one point and to Salesianum by 13. The Vikings’ average win was by 54 points.
“These guys are really motivated,” said head coach Bill Geppert. “We lost some great seniors to graduation, but these guys are ready to step up and fill their spots. We’ve got a lot of good underclassmen to add depth to our program.”
Gone from last year’s team are Brian Fleming, Ellis Jack, Kevin Lewandowski and Luke Robertson. But the Class of 2025 is there to pick up the torch. Burke Healy, Liam Drevno, Kieran Morrissey, Shane Toback, Davis Mault, Tyler Healy, Holden Tighe and Jacob Gabbard will hold down the senior leadership.
“We are a really energetic and enthusiastic team,” said Morrissey. “We are really good at picking up the slack for other people and bringing the team together as a whole. We are a team that can work hard and also have fun. That’s Cape swimming.”
Juniors back this season are Trent Neal, Ryan Morgan, Brooks Leonhartt, Nolan Moore and John Keys.
Sophomores looking to contribute are Garrett Vansant, Brady Schell, Liam Mitchell, Elijah Oliver, Weston Bohl, Kolbe and Kyle Green, Cole Huxtable and Hugh Jack.
“The connection the older guys have with the younger swimmers really unites us as a team,” said Drevno. “We have people that haven’t competed in the past, and we get them into levels that can place in the conference and states. That’s a tribute to our coaches.”
“Our goals every season are the four trophies of the conference champion and conference meet champs for both boys and girls,” smiled Morrissey. “This year, we want one of the trophies that have the State of Delaware on it.”
