Little Bella dropped her letter to Santa Claus in the mailbox outside his house on Second Street in Lewes.
Mr. Claus had arrived minutes earlier. The Cape Water Taxi brought him to the city dock. He was escorted through 1812 Park and up the street to his home for the holidays.
Bella said she didn’t ask Santa for anything; she just told him she loved him. Lewes merchants love him too.
Santa was a big draw for children and their parents Nov. 30, which was the annual Small Business Saturday.
Downtown shops were filled with people making early holiday purchases.
Jen Mason, owner of Biblion Used Books and Rare Finds, said shopping small can really make a difference.
“It’s become part of their tradition. The world needs big-box stores too, but to even one day a year make this kind of choice can really transform the small business,” Mason said.
Jane and Derek Ross from Chester County, Pa., walked down Second Street with coffee from Lewes Bake Shoppe and a shopping bag filled with other treasures.
“We’ve been in the kids’ toy store, the florist and the little gift shop. We’ve been to every store along here,” Jane said.
Merchants will be able to thank their customers at Hospitality Night, from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 5, in downtown Lewes.
Betsy Reamer, Lewes Chamber of Commerce executive director, said business owners look forward to seeing people come through the door.
“It means a lot to the town, for residents and visitors, to come support small businesses that are here year-round. This season is an important one for them financially,” Reamer said.
