Paulette Criaris, esteemed educator
Paulette Criaris, 76, of Lewes, an esteemed educator and cherished community member, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 26, 2025. Born May 15, 1948, in Staten Island, N.Y., she was widely known for her kindness, generosity, and adventurous spirit. Paulette’s family was among the earliest settlers on the island, and her deep connection to the community remained a defining aspect of her life.
Paulette’s career in education began when she graduated cum laude from Wagner College with a bachelor’s degree in education. Her passion for learning led her to earn a master’s degree from Richmond College and pursue postgraduate work at Middlesex Community College. She went on to have a diverse and impactful career as a teacher for the City of New York, an adjunct professor at Middlesex Community College, and a senior software engineer for Bellcore in Piscataway, N.J.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Paulette was skilled in needlepoint and cross-stitch, and she dedicated much of her love and energy to raising and training her beloved Welsh Terriers. A passionate reader and mahjong enthusiast, she was also known for her exquisite collection of blue and white porcelain. Paulette’s love of travel allowed her to explore the world, enriching her life and the lives of those who shared her adventures.
A passionate reader, Paulette was an active member of her local book club, where she found joy in discussing literature and connecting with fellow book lovers.
Paulette was the foundation of her family, offering unwavering support and affection. She is survived by her devoted husband, Basil Criaris; and her cousins, John Van Name (his wife Linda), Robert Van Name, Karen Mascaro, Deborah Lenahan and Sandra Moshier. She will also be fondly remembered by her sister-in-law, Suzanne Criaris for her warmth and generosity. Paulette was predeceased by her parents, Paul and Ann Van Name; and her siblings, Katherine and Paul Van Name. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who know her.
Paulette’s membership in the Alpha Omicron Psi sorority was a cherished part of her life, reflecting her deep belief in sisterhood and service.
Paulette lived a full life, defined by love, kindness, and an adventurous spirit that will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Welsh Terrier Cares, welshterriercares.com, an organization dedicated to the welfare of Welsh Terriers, a breed that Paulette held dear.
