Milton man dies in Lewes crash

March 12, 2025

A 68-year-old Milton man died March 11, after he was hurt in a collision with a box truck while riding his bicycle on Senators Drive in Lewes.

Delaware State Police said Steve Carpenter was riding his bike northbound on a bicycle path that parallels Venables Drive approaching Senators Drive. At the same time, a Hino ST box truck was driving toward that same intersection. According to a preliminary investigation, as the box truck started to turn onto Senators Drive, the bicyclist also entered the intersection. Carpenter tried to avoid a collision but hit the right rear of the box truck, police said.

He was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries. The driver of the box truck, a 26-year-old Wilmington man, and a passenger, a 27-year-old New Castle man, were uninjured.

The roadway was closed for two hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The crash is still under investigation by police. Anyone who witnessed the collision should contact Sgt. Mitchell at 302-703-3269, send a private message to Delaware State Police on Facebook Messenger or call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
