Clifford Smith, successful career, accomplished coach

March 14, 2025

Clifford “Torchy” Smith, 90, of Milton, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, March 12, 2025. Torchy was born in Ridgewood, N.Y. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Helga; his two sons, Dirk (Susan) and Timothy (Kim); his brother, Roger (Sheila); and his grandchildren, Sarah, Cole, Madeline, Kyle, Sean and Trevor. Torchy and Helga raised their family together in Deer Park, N.Y., and retired to Milton 2001.

Torchy graduated from Wagner College in 1961 with a bachelor of arts degree and was a four-year starter on their football team. He had a successful career in the insurance and reinsurance industry, and coached at a very high level for multiple high schools, colleges, and semi-professional teams, including the role of defensive coordinator for the Cape Henlopen Vikings. Notably, Torchy was the head coach of the Garrity Knights of Ridgewood, N.Y., leading them to two consecutive undefeated seasons in 1962 and 1963.

Torchy and Helga were world travelers, exploring all known (and unknown) parts of the globe together. Torchy was an avid runner, completing multiple marathons and road races until his knees gave out in his mid-80s. He also summited many high peaks of the world, including Mont Blanc, Mount Whitney, and Kilimanjaro.

He was an incredible son, husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend, and he was an inspiration to all who knew him. Torchy left behind a great legacy and will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

A visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m., Saturday, April 5, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m.

Memorial donations in Torchy's honor can be made at brightfocus.org/cureALZ.
