A driver who crashed his car onto Lewes Beach in the early morning hours of March 23 has been charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving and no proof of insurance.
The incident happened about 2 a.m., in the area of the main beach parking lot at Savannah Beach. Doorbell camera footage shared on social media showed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed down Savannah Road toward the beach.
When firefighters and EMS personnel from Lewes Fire Department arrived on the scene, they found a vehicle that had rolled over several times, coming to rest on the passenger side about 25 yards off the roadway on Lewes Beach.
The driver was trapped, and firefighters stabilized the vehicle and extricated the driver, who was taken to Beebe Healthcare, officials said.
Lewes Police Chief Thomas Spell said the driver is in stable condition.
