Smiles brighten up a dreary day as Cape hockey honors Carolyn Ivins

Vikings beat Indian River 8-0; road gets tougher

Oct. 9 was “Back to the Future” for the Cape Henlopen field hockey program as coach Carolyn Ivins, sporting her 1979 state championship jacket, was an honorary game captain.

There was no problem finding the relentlessly fit 74-year-old sky pilot of Cape hockey, who lifted the program off the ground in the first years of the school district and developed numerous all-state players including Adele Mears, who went on to play on an Old Dominion national championship team, and Diane Travis, Cape’s most prolific scorer in history. Ivins has been to every major and important Cape field hockey game the Vikings have ever played in the last 43 years.

The game was an 8-0 shutout over Indian River, but the storyline was in the smiles of the women past and present who easily sensed that they were part of something very special.

“The field looks different from this side," Ivins said looking back at the stands of the Stadium with No Name. “I still feel nervous like a coach, but when the game starts I’m going to go sit down with everyone else. “

Cape outshot Indian River 59-1 with a 25-1 advantage in corners. Indians goalie Sarah Hickman was a serious player and was credited with 34 saves, many of them the real deal variety.

The five first-half goals in the game came from Allie Yeager (Anna Frederick) 25:49, Yeager (T. Bernheimer) 23:29, Frederick (T. Bernheimer) 21:57, Kat Judge (Frederick) 16:38 and Alex Coverdale 11:04.

Cape’s three second-half goals came from Emily Baptiste (Alexis Gooch) 21:17, Baptiste (Tiara Duffy) 14:48 and Coverdale (Sara Young) 4:15.

The Vikings were set to play at once-beaten Caesar Rodney on Oct. 11 (past print deadline) then will host Smyrna Tuesday, Oct. 16, before a huge game at Polytech Thursday, Oct. 18.

Corners - There are still a boatload of teams with fat records nearly 10 games into the season, including Charter 10-0, Caravel 9-0, Tatnall 7-0, Cape 9-1, Delmar 9-1, Polytech 8-1, Caesar Rodney 7-1 and the always dangerous Tower Hill 6-2-1. There is another group of teams, including Sussex Tech and Milford, that can play with anyone on any given day and are dangerous tournament teams.
