Polar plunge weekend starts with Friday snowfall
Snow started falling an hour after sunrise Friday. Small little flakes that promised to change the looks of the area for a few hours. I grabbed a few photos when I drove into Lewes to pick up my Ravens bracelet for Purple Friday and then headed off to Rehoboth Beach to drop off Lewes Polar Plunge booklets for the winter weekend festival benefiting Special Olympics Delaware. A few more photos there. While I was shooting a photo up Lake Gerar toward the Henlopen Hotel, the darkening sky cut loose with another stiff flurry of snow. In just moments, the Henlopen was no longer visible. It was the squall's last gasp, adding another layer of frosting to the winter cake.
The forecast for the weekend is pure winter. Chance of snow both Saturday and Sunday though the polar bears should find rising mercury with temperatures in the low 40s by jump time. No big storms in the forecast. Just winter showers.
Thousands of bears are expected for Sunday's jump. What a spectacle. If you don't plan to jump - like me - it's still worth a drive to Rehoboth to see one of Delaware's most successful annual fundraisers. It's a rush!
