American Classic Golf Club tees it up in Midway
If there's one thing a golfer will never complain about, it's a variety of courses to play. Adding to the Cape Region's already eclectic group of Par 3, executive and full-size golf courses, the owners of the American Classic Golf Club in Lewes are looking to fill a specific void.
“One of the things we found challenging when you go to one of the bigger courses around here is they're often very crowded and it takes the entire day to play,” said Bonnie Morrison, who owns the club with her husband Rock. “We want to offer a quality course you can come to that has some challenges, but doesn't take up your whole day.”
Located on Postal Lane behind the Superfresh in Midway, the former Heritage Inn & Golf Club has been renovated and redesigned into a nine-hole executive course that offers its share of challenging Par 3s and 4s.
The par 31 course features three sets of tees, playing as short as 1,583 yards and as long as 2,120 yards. The par 4 ninth hole is the only hole on the course with an even longer tee box for those golfers looking to up the difficulty.
Golfers have the option of playing nine holes for $20 Monday through Thursday and $23 Friday through Sunday or 18 holes for $25 weekdays and $30 weekends. Locals receive a 10 percent discount. Twelve-month memberships are also available.
The business is a family affair. Despite owning and operating a geothermal construction business in central Pennsylvania, Bonnie and her husband will always have a presence in the clubhouse. She said either she or her husband will always be there. They'll be accompanied by their two daughters and two nephews, who also work at the course.
“As a business person, I like to take the young people in the family and teach them a little bit about running a business and give them a start,” Bonnie said.
The Morrisons have been coming to Rehoboth Beach for the last 30 years. Bonnie said she and her husband are always looking for real estate in the region, and already own a few properties. When they discovered the golf course was on the market, Rock's imagination ran wild.
“He's an avid golfer,” Bonnie said. “He thought this would be a fun challenge to see what he could do with this. He kind of took the course on and redesigned a lot of the holes.”
Rock incorporated many features from his favorite courses to add to the difficulty and overall aesthetics of the layout. Some holes were spruced up, while others were completely redesigned, which has resulted in a fresh look for those who may have played the course before, Bonnie said.
The course is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to dusk. Tee times are accepted until 3 p.m. and twilight golf begins at 4 p.m. For more information, go to www.americanclassicgolf.com or call the clubhouse at 302-703-6662.
