Cooper, McGuiness, take oath in Rehoboth

October 4, 2014

Rehoboth Beach Mayor Sam Cooper and Commissioner Kathy McGuiness took their seats for new three-year terms Sept. 19.

Cooper and McGuiness were administered the oath by Alderman’s Court Judge Renee Bennett. Cooper won his ninth term as mayor by defeating challenger Tom McGlone at the Aug. 9 municipal election. Cooper has been involved with city politics since 1981 when he served as commissioner and won the mayor’s seat in 1990.

McGuiness was reelected as commissioner after resigning her seat in January 2013 to take a year off while commuting between her homes in Henlopen Acres and Park City, Utah. Prior to resigning, McGuiness had served four consecutive terms as commissioner.

Commissioner Lorraine Zellers was also reelected, winning her third consecutive term but had made known before that she would be unavailable for the Sept. 19 commissioners’ meeting.
