Game honors Kevin LeMaire - A sea of red shirts filled the stands at the Sept. 30 Cape field hockey Red Out game versus Delmar, which raised $500 for the American Heart Association in honor of the late Kevin LeMaire, a Cape teacher who died from heart disease two years ago. Kevin’s daughter Korrine is a sophomore on the hockey team, daughter Karissa is a freshman hockey player at Lynchburg, and son Kaleb wrestles at Lock Haven. All the Cape players including JV wore headbands that read “Mr. LeMaire.”
Concussion protocol - Jacki Coveleski has missed the last two games for the University of Delaware field hockey team after suffering a head injury that required stitches. Jacki is expecting to be cleared to play this weekend. Teammate Rebecca Pepper has also been sidelined with concussion syndrome and is not expected back in the next week. Cape freshman Jody Boyer, the leading scorer on the JV field hockey team, will miss two games after hitting her head on the turf. The quick concussion diagnosis has worried football coaches but seems to be more of an issue in field hockey. Note: Late news has “Quincy Football” aka John Duckworth out for the Cape football team for the next three games. Losing Quincy is like losing four good players.
Gramps is amped - I am part of the Cape field hockey juggernaut going back to when I arrived as a teacher in 1975. I am part of it because I care about outcomes. I’m part of it because I know the four coaches of five Cape state title teams: Carolyn Ivins, Ruth Skoglund, Nicole Catanzaro Hughes and two by Kate Windett; one Caesar Rodney championship team coached by Debbie Windett; 10 Tower Hill championship teams coached by Robin Adair; and two Sussex Tech teams coached by Nancy Tribbett Steen. That’s 18 state titles won by coaches I know personally, so yes, I care about outcomes and when I have “blood in the game,” my caring is amped up.
Tell me what I saw? - I am a professional sports watcher, writer, photographer and analyzer. And I know enough to understand that the field hockey game I saw was not the same game seen by the coaches. In some ways it’s like talking on a serious subject to a teenager. You know what you said, but you have no idea what they heard. I spoke to the Windett Tribal Council after the Vikings’ fast and furious 3-0 win over a young, fast, dangerous Delmar team Tuesday night. Kate, Debbie and Bill, the family forward scout, met on the field and I invited myself into the foyer of field hockey, kind of like standing on the front porch of acceptance. I tried to hang with them, but I’m out of their league; I’m more like a Double A field hockey guy. Let's just say they were not happy with Cape’s performance both in execution and excitement. I was just happy they won, and the day Delmar gets them, I’ll be happy for them as well.
Kansas City, Here I Come - I rooted for the Chiefs against the Patriots Monday night because of Andy Reid and the energy in Arrowhead Stadium; it was just a better story than Brady and Belichick. And the Royals’ Tuesday night 12-inning, 9-8 win over the Oakland A's was the best game I’ve seen since the Phillies beat Nolan Ryan in 1980. A historical point: the A’s moved from Philadelphia to Kansas City and eventually to Oakland. If Philly had kept two baseball teams, I never would have left the city and moved to Delaware and would have missed this summer’s Milton 10-year-old Pat Knight championship team. The Royals were an expansion franchise in 1969 along with the Seattle Pilots, who became the Milwaukee Brewers after the Braves left town and moved to Atlanta.
Snippets - Cape’s new scoreboard in Legends Stadium is being assembled - lots of steel and underground conduits to support all the high-tech digitized displays. It is going to be awesome. My understanding is the Jumbotron module will be available for 2014 Homecoming but just for display purposes, then it’s like Jumbo and Go. Here’s what I know: Students today are so quick and smart when it comes to technology, the problem is finding a teacher who can harness all that talent and give them direction while staying a couple mouse clicks ahead.
Caroline Judge had two goals as Northeastern University field hockey defeated UC Davis 7-1. Kaci Coveleski starts on defense for the 8-2 Huskies. Attendance for the game was listed as 0, which I know is wrong because Steve Judge was there.
Beacon field hockey improved to 3-0 with a 2-1 win at Delmar. Goals were scored by Marcella Sabbaugh and Talbot Buck.
Luke Elentrio, Middletown linebacker, honored his Uncle Tom Coveleski before the Beat the Beast game versus Glasgow, which raised awareness for cancer. Go on now, git!
