Tyler Coupe is the new head coach of the Cape Henlopen volleyball team, replacing Carrie Evick. He is a young pup, having graduated from Salesianum in 2011, where he was Delaware Player of the Year. Coupe went on to graduate from West Chester University and the last two seasons was an assistant coach at Ursuline Academy.

His mother, Pam Coupe, was a longtime JV coach at Ursuline and will serve as her son’s assistant.

“I work for SoDel as a bartender at two different places [his boss is Scott Kammerer] and so I guess I have good people skills," he said. "I hope someday to get a job in education."

Coupe was inside the Cape gym June 29 for a Cape summer league game. The league was organized by longtime volleyball enthusiast Nick DelCampo and includes Caesar Rodney, Sussex Tech, Delmarva Christian, Indian River, Sussex Academy and Delmar.

“I’m meeting players for the first time, watching them play, and there is a lot of talent here at Cape," Coupe said. "Coach Carrie has been really helpful in introducing me to players and giving me a history of the program. Just a great pool of talent with tremendous support from Athletic Director Bob Cilento and a great facility.”

The Vikings are coming off two straight seasons of 11-4, with a three-year mark of 32-13.

Last year, Cape lost inside the conference to Smyrna, Polytech and Caesar Rodney.

Note: Boys' volleyball is a spring sport in Delaware. In Tyler Coupe’s senior year, the Sals were 16-3. Tyler was a kill shot-spiking, assist-making star.
