Joan O. Kulina, retired nurse

Joan O. Kulina, 83, of Lewes, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2015, at her residence. She was born Saturday, Oct. 3, 1931, on a family farm in Bunker Hill, Pa., the youngest of six sisters born to the late Francis and Marie (Gilvary) O'Konsky.

Mrs. Kulina was raised on the family farm and would later pursue a career in nursing, completing her RN training at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. She married a former patient, Thomas J. Kulina, and relocated to Woodbridge, N.J., raising their two sons, Patrick and Michael.

In 1981 at the age of 56, Mrs. Kulina's husband Thomas passed away unexpectedly. She would return to her nursing career, working first with St. James Grade School, and then full-time with the Amboy Care Center in Perth Amboy, N.J. Mrs. Kulina retired in1995, which led to her move to the Lewes area, following her son Patrick's family. She also had the enjoyment of her best friend, Marie Kapiec, who lived in the area. However, her greatest joy was time spent with her two grandchildren, whom she adored.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Kulina was preceded in death by her loving husband, Thomas; and her five sisters, Katherine, Marie, Lucy, Nancy and Peg. She is survived by her two sons, Patrick Kulina and his wife Marcy of Lewes, and Michael Kulina; two grandchildren, Payton of Washington, D.C. and Zoe of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three nephews, Daniel Brace of Swoyersville, Pa., Timothy Brace of Denver, Colo. and William Brace of Mountain Top, Pa.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 21, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will be private.
