The annual Patriot Golf Day fundraiser is set once again for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4-7. There are great opportunities at nearly every golf course in Sussex County for Cape Region golfers to show their appreciation for the sacrifices made by our nation’s men and women in uniform.
At participating golf courses, golfers donate funds for college scholarships for U.S. military dependents whose spouse or parent was killed or disabled in action in Iraq and Afghanistan.
PGA professional Dan Rooney created the foundation, served three tours of overseas military duty and continues his significant involvement. Thousands of golf courses participate in all 50 states. Thus far more than 7,500 scholarships have been awarded using the millions of dollars raised from the weekend event.
As in prior years, several Cape Region and Sussex County golf courses have set up donation sites for golfers for Labor Day weekend. These include Kings Creek Country Club, Rehoboth Beach Country Club, Baywood Greens Golf Club in Long Neck, The Peninsula Golf & Country Club in Millsboro, the Rookery South in Milton and Rookery North in Milford, Bear Trap Dunes in Ocean View, Bayside Resort Golf Club in Selbyville, Heritage Shores Golf Club in Bridgeville and Hooper's Landing Golf Course in Seaford.

DSGA Scholarship tourney Oct. 5
Former Rehoboth Beach Country Club head golf pro Ron Barrows always makes sure I know what’s going on with the Delaware State Golf Association’s Scholarship Fund.
I think it has something to do with the fact that he was among its founders, and remains one of its biggest supporters.
Barrows sent a note about this year’s annual fundraiser tournament, the prime source for the thousands of dollars the fund provides for golf-oriented college students, including many Cape Region recipients.
The tournament will take place Monday, Oct. 5, at Rehoboth Beach Country Club, beginning with an 11:30 a.m. lunch and a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. The format is the best single net of four. For those players without official USGA handicaps, scoring will be based on a modified Callaway scoring system.
The $160 per player fee covers the lunch, the round, a cocktail hour after the round and tournament prizes. There will also be a silent auction following play. Single entries are welcome, but those coming as foursomes pay a reduced fee of $585.
For entry forms and any other information, contact the Delaware State Golf Association at 302-234-3365, or at 7234 Lancaster Pike, Suite 210-A, Hockessin, DE 19707.
