Marjorie W. Steiner, retired teacher

Mrs. Marjorie W. Steiner, 77, of Milford, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, at Milford Memorial Hospital after eight years of fighting a chronic respiratory Illness, along with being a cancer survivor since 1977.

Marge was born in Laurel, April 1, 1938, to Dorothy Phillips Wright and Wallace W. Wright. She attended Laurel High School, graduating as class Valedictorian in 1956.

Marge studied elementary education at the University of Delaware, graduating in 1960. Following graduation, she married Edward J. Steiner of Milford whom she had been dating since the summer after her junior year in high school.

After a short career as an elementary school teacher, Marge taught at Avenue Pre-School for 23 years. Marge was also a very active and involved mother and grandmother. She was committed to advocating for her children. She attended all sports events, school performances and activities, and other community activities for her children, and later her grandchildren.

Marge was a member of Avenue United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years, and was an altar guild member, a greeter, and led the greeter program for many years. She was an active member of the Milford community, serving at one time as the president of the Milford Hospital Auxiliary, and being a very active member of the Milford Hospital and Bayhealth Boards of Directors for 27 years. Beyond Milford, she served on the Board of Trustees for Delaware State University for five years.

Marge was an avid and competitive golfer with her husband and friends, accruing three holes in one during her lifetime. She enjoyed playing Bridge and her book club. She was an ardent reader and premier customer of the Milford Library.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark E. Steiner of Lewes in 2007.

Marge is survived by her husband of 55-and-a-half years, Edward J. Steiner; two daughters, Bishop Sandra L. Steiner Ball (her husband Barry Ball) of Scott Depot, W.Va., and Karen A. Steiner (her husband Anand Bahl) of San Jose, Calif.; three grandchildren: Sarah Ball of Easton, Md., Becky Ball of Orlando, Fla. and Anna Steiner (her mother Judge Paula Ryan) of Lewes; and a brother, Thomas Wright (his wife Mona) of Laurel.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 28, at Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St., Milford, where the family will welcome friends beginning at noon.

Marge and her family are greatly appreciative of the medical community and Milford Memorial Hospital staff who gave her compassionate and supportive care in a variety of circumstances through many years.
