Carl M. Ostergaard, retired orthodontist
Carl M. Ostergaard, 85, of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Morris Township, N.J., passed away Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, of natural causes.
A longtime resident of New Jersey, Carl retired to Delaware after working for over 45 years as an orthodontist in Hackettstown, Morristown and Morris Township, N.J. Carl enjoyed flying, had his commercial license, and was rated as an IFR instructor. He was also a tournament bridge player as well as an avid golfer.
Carl was a graduate of Clifford Scott High School in East Orange, N.J. He attended Upsala College in East Orange and graduated Suma Cum Laude from dental school at the University of Pennsylvania. Carl served four years in the U.S. Navy as a ship’s dentist. Upon completing his service in the Navy, he re-enrolled in orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania and started private practice in 1960 as an orthodontist.
Carl served on the Morris Township Committee, served one year as the deputy mayor of Morris Township, was a past president of the Morris Township Board of Health, and was a proud member of the Morristown American Legion, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Morris County, and the Rotary Club of Morris Plains.
Carl is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sue Murphy Ostergaard; his daughter Donna Hart and her husband Barry, of Ringtown, Pa.; his son Leonard and his wife Ann, of Tamaqua, Pa.; his son Martin and his wife Kelly, of Hoboken, N.J.; and his son Andrew and his wife Misty, of Manhattan, Kan; as well as his pride and joy, his four grandchildren: Janelle, James, Emily and Samantha.
