Pennsylvania woman bests the field at Run to the Plunge

February 12, 2016

A field of 464 runners stepped off from the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand Feb. 6 for the annual Run to the Plunge as part of the Lewes Polar Bear Plunge weekend.

The first runner to round the final turn from First Street to Baltimore Avenue was 24-year-old Marina Orrson of Shavertown, Pa. The 2013 Misericordia University grad had a few steps on John Martino, and a strong push down the final stretch kept Orrson ahead for good, beating runner-up Martino by four seconds with a 17:52 5K.

Orrson, wearing a Keystone Track Club jersey, ran 1:23:26 at the Rehoboth Beach Half Marathon in 2014. She is listed on Keystone Track Club's website as a member of the group's elite roster.

Rounding out the top five for the race were Greg Cauller in 18:01, Drew Harris in 18:06 and Martin Rodriguez in 18:11. In total, 12 runners broke 20 minutes.

Following Orrson in the women's race were Lisa Smagala in 22:08, Cat Volmer in 22:39, Cori Whittaker in 22:51 and Holly Krantz in 22:58.
