The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “The Two Popes,” starting Friday, Dec. 13. This comedy-drama takes place behind Vatican walls where two popes, one conservative and one liberal, must find common ground.
Frustrated with the direction of the church, Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) in 2012 asks Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins) to give him permission to retire. Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that will shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Behind Vatican walls, a struggle takes place between tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness, as these two very different men confront their pasts in order to forge a future for a billion followers around the world.
Screening times are 4 and 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 13; 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14; 2 p.m., Sunday and Monday, Dec. 15 and 16; and 4 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 18.
