Freshmen Abby Marsh and Bri Windish teamed to toss an 11-0 no-hitter against visiting Sussex Academy April 26, on the Vikings’ Teacher Appreciation Day. The Vikings move to 5-5, while the Seahawks fall to 1-9.
Marsh started the game in the circle, striking out five while walking two over three innings. Bri Windish came in from the bullpen to pitch the final two innings, recording four strikeouts while allowing just one walk. Both pitchers got up early on the batters, throwing first-pitch strikes to 15 of 21 batters.
Cape freshman third baseman Alivia Heers went yard in the first inning, collecting two RBIs. Ava Calciano had three RBIs. Ava Simeone garnered two RBIs. Marsh helped herself at the plate, knocking in two runs.
Milena Buehler scored three runs for the Lady Vikings, while Calciano and Heers scored two, and Jay’Lyn Slater, Marsh, Abi Crouch and Simeone each scored one.
“It was nice having the teachers there for the game,” said Marsh. “We appreciate all of their support.”
“It was a cool experience to throw a no-hitter with Abby,” said Windish. “It was special having our teachers there to see it.”
Freshman pitcher Carson Gesuero started the game for the Seahawks. She struck out three batters. Sophomore Sophie Noon came in from the bullpen and struck out two. Junior Caelynn Jorgenson went the distance behind the plate.
“We are really proud of our whole team,” said Cape coach Shannon Timmons. “Everyone contributed to the win today. Abby and Bri combined efforts for the no-hit shutout on the mound. The entire lineup was strong at the plate; our base running and team strategy was executed well. The team has worked hard to learn how to make adjustments, and we did that very well today.”
The Vikings travel to Smyrna Thursday, April 28, to face the 4-5 Eagles.
